Resilient Yards

    The Shade and Water Courtyard

A walled courtyard that pairs a pierced shade screen with a stone water wall and a shallow basin.

    The code skeleton

A detached pergola or lath house of 400 sq ft or less is exempt only outside any fire district (Los Angeles Building Code section 101.5). The Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone is a fire district (Los Angeles Municipal Code 91.7207).

The LADBS pool bulletin requires an enclosure for water 18 in deep or deeper (LADBS bulletin P/BC 2026-014). The basin in this courtyard is drawn shallower than that line.

A laboratory study of small and medium water features found that water sound masks road traffic by perception when its level sits close to the traffic level (a Heriot-Watt University study of water sounds).

A pool, fish pond or other body of water that must be fenced keeps its water clean and of reasonable clarity. A 6 in black disk on a white tile at the deepest point must be visible from the sidewalk at up to 10 yards (Los Angeles Municipal Code 91.8118).

    The ancient skin

Mughal builders cut stone into pierced screens, called jali, that break hard light into pattern and let air pass. The shade screen takes that form: a pierced panel over a seat, a path or a wall of water.

Moorish garden builders ran water through narrow stone channels and set it against walls, so a small courtyard held the sight and sound of water. The water wall follows that plan: a stone face, a thin sheet of water and a low basin.

The two meet at the seat. Light arrives through the screen and the sound of water arrives from the wall. We set both by eye and by ear on the site, and the Standard records how we listen.

    What is included

A pierced shade screen or a louvered shade frame, sized to the permit line for the site.

A water wall faced in stone, with a recirculating pump and a concealed return.

A low basin shallower than 18 in.

    Stone seating and paving.

Planting in mineral beds beside the wall.

A recorded listening test at the seat, described in The Resilient Yard Standard.

Care steps for the pump, the filter and the basin, written into the handover.

    What we do not claim

No noise reduction figure. Water sound masks traffic by perception. We state no measured reduction, and we do not say the water cancels road noise.

No cooling figure. We state no temperature drop and no cooling figure for the courtyard.

No fire rating. We rate no screen, frame or surface for fire. In a fire district the pergola exemption does not apply (Los Angeles Building Code section 101.5).

No stormwater credit. We claim no stormwater credit for the paving, the basin or the planting.

No pool. Water 18 in deep or deeper brings the pool rules (LADBS bulletin P/BC 2026-014), and a licensed pool builder builds that vessel (the CSLB guide to pool construction).
